This blog documents my artistic practice in and out of the studio, and showcases new works in progress, upcoming shows, events and thoughts about my art and art in general.Jon Shawhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02282682433038197811noreply@blogger.comBlogger124125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1574561881557236257.post-86196333941487956192013-12-06T15:35:00.003-08:002013-12-06T15:35:26.954-08:00Painting Vancouver AlleywaysMy latest studies have focused on the back alleys of Vancouver. Anybody familiar with the city's Downtown East Side will recognize these icons.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEil6tUJhm2JUW69ZOrwAJvcE0ACFDrY_OuoK_AA93Yla1algthjNgx0tQRA7kVp58tUI33erBFeFw5899PoTrbtUB5LIefh_f_K4PTZwuEzTKaHIUm_6tjoag4p1HvBb11ol2PYW1p7tNI/s1600/whatup.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEil6tUJhm2JUW69ZOrwAJvcE0ACFDrY_OuoK_AA93Yla1algthjNgx0tQRA7kVp58tUI33erBFeFw5899PoTrbtUB5LIefh_f_K4PTZwuEzTKaHIUm_6tjoag4p1HvBb11ol2PYW1p7tNI/s320/whatup.jpg" width="318" /></a></div>
<br />
My attraction to these environments has always focused around their cluttered nature. They are a haphazard collection of wood posts, overhead cables and wires, trash, dumpsters and other eclectic additions. The more you look, the more you'll see.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVDhsRwarNv11-Zol9NnPWcNHJJ-sK_W7eEsoMmpC7loAGJdhjSVA0vAblstkBCMe-l_tmyCTJF6s6aUy3yXiYhsu3tAnJW5gKFb9iokxUtVr36tEVw4eUumRUNl-TrnnfJ2VLulcrCk0/s1600/empress.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVDhsRwarNv11-Zol9NnPWcNHJJ-sK_W7eEsoMmpC7loAGJdhjSVA0vAblstkBCMe-l_tmyCTJF6s6aUy3yXiYhsu3tAnJW5gKFb9iokxUtVr36tEVw4eUumRUNl-TrnnfJ2VLulcrCk0/s320/empress.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The anonymity of the alleys is also intriguing. Unlike an intersection with familiar markings, such as street signs, these alleyways seem to blur into one common image. Many of them look very similar but are in very different locations. I reaffirmed this idea when I recently exhibited these, and a number of people told me "I know that alley!". When they told me where it was from, however, they were incorrect.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvj3Zkl1kue6_l7BO4aaR-K1fnc2YviPkgQyGcplkHhw6DChKsqFoJKw2CgeQYfOyyXBMl0-Rxg1siAen9LSIJH0MPE7uKvqS4hgNeo2K-V_Ck0eGb4Ie3x9831_Fk22gLwZRUSNydTk0/s1600/no_love.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvj3Zkl1kue6_l7BO4aaR-K1fnc2YviPkgQyGcplkHhw6DChKsqFoJKw2CgeQYfOyyXBMl0-Rxg1siAen9LSIJH0MPE7uKvqS4hgNeo2K-V_Ck0eGb4Ie3x9831_Fk22gLwZRUSNydTk0/s320/no_love.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
One of my favourite components of these works is the colour schemes. While I explore and photograph the alleys, I take detailed note of the little bits of discarded garbage and packaging that is found within them. I work as a graphic designer for an advertising agency, and I pay attention to the colour schemes that these discarded wrappers utilize. I combine various colour schemes from these discarded objects to compose interesting combinations of various colours in the rest of the painting.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhC-hmvY2rOhlcH40IyGB1t_yiY7ej1vvZHla90WrfHEtF7kH7gvQXB55eyO_Ltjen6ICwTt-jGK-S_P4HeyGCXlDG4p9NjaLI2GRI7moCDjXgEYAVgXSbjeFl7RZKZyXqu4E-CZLe7GXE/s1600/luckystrike.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="318" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhC-hmvY2rOhlcH40IyGB1t_yiY7ej1vvZHla90WrfHEtF7kH7gvQXB55eyO_Ltjen6ICwTt-jGK-S_P4HeyGCXlDG4p9NjaLI2GRI7moCDjXgEYAVgXSbjeFl7RZKZyXqu4E-CZLe7GXE/s320/luckystrike.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
My work focuses on the concept of urban exploration. I essentially find myself in particular locales, and explore the environments with my camera. I immerse myself there for a bit of time, and enjoy all the little nuances and components. I really enjoy the act of becoming one with my immediate surroundings, and appreciating what is there.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_iT1ZvEQybNUjIyM9WeU8DToHVsWqrVjX1KBhk0aYCc6T5vJPmkLcssZMLK5HPyNJu6fogciK8l9NSuguns7KL-Y53FllWerPz6aZZQK5R7vXYKDJbi5dQgXSr23Ws4wuukzDAZSFsS0/s1600/hastings_and_cambie.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_iT1ZvEQybNUjIyM9WeU8DToHVsWqrVjX1KBhk0aYCc6T5vJPmkLcssZMLK5HPyNJu6fogciK8l9NSuguns7KL-Y53FllWerPz6aZZQK5R7vXYKDJbi5dQgXSr23Ws4wuukzDAZSFsS0/s320/hastings_and_cambie.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have recently been awarded a new exhibition at the North Van Arts Council, on Lonsdale in North Vancouver for 2014. I will be focusing on creating more of these works for many months to come, and continue to push and explore colour combinations and colour use within them. I feel that interesting next steps may be the addition of texture and collage elements to the pieces.</div>

While there I met a nice fellow from my home province of Ontario who liked my work and we discussed commission ideas in the following months.<br />
<br />
We worked on composition and image options for an octopus, which is a very wonderful choice in terms of details, visual complexities and textures.<br />
<br />
A couple of rounds of design options eventually led to a horizontal composition, at a size of 20" x 50". The nature of the image within that size presented a very cool crop and allowed me to flow various parts of the image in and out of the picture plane.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmKBJciddwqtjd_Mrs7hBwbSeQvbyUxAFtoA7pVGDnAsnpSIlzIEqARGa10NTUEg7cke0R1UjHvQV1EaZRRnbbfSkK18UClDzMxeibOq0QpFYjPx-IcKl6CZ1g7pMWMzlpveUJ4EC5za8/s1600/20x50_octopus.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="128" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmKBJciddwqtjd_Mrs7hBwbSeQvbyUxAFtoA7pVGDnAsnpSIlzIEqARGa10NTUEg7cke0R1UjHvQV1EaZRRnbbfSkK18UClDzMxeibOq0QpFYjPx-IcKl6CZ1g7pMWMzlpveUJ4EC5za8/s320/20x50_octopus.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I had the panel custom-built. Typically I purchase my wood panels from the local art shop but this one was a unique size so it wouldn't allow for that.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmDlTz0V2Lj73p7dUOURjZKfzNufyqHp1-jGi6kAQ2hR_196uzSq5kNnW1WCE50oDMKKy7RXIb94-qgvnWJne4k_G-G0tt2w9mQW1zcizwURy_5X29MJZflL4q6BSPyDuwu0gfyx6DJ3c/s1600/01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmDlTz0V2Lj73p7dUOURjZKfzNufyqHp1-jGi6kAQ2hR_196uzSq5kNnW1WCE50oDMKKy7RXIb94-qgvnWJne4k_G-G0tt2w9mQW1zcizwURy_5X29MJZflL4q6BSPyDuwu0gfyx6DJ3c/s320/01.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Several coats of clear gesso mean that the panel is primed but the wood grain would still show through.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgU7InLXBuFmHRXhR2nN4nd6XMLfVqqx7F208qByDMJ-hyj8cw7rgacSVyl73VDcdrroGnFyx4vUrRewvbJtjrCGiBVnybIEJxaRY6EF6uRlsXLq5MPI8agIpppsO571ZDZ0DxLxJ_BDOE/s1600/02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgU7InLXBuFmHRXhR2nN4nd6XMLfVqqx7F208qByDMJ-hyj8cw7rgacSVyl73VDcdrroGnFyx4vUrRewvbJtjrCGiBVnybIEJxaRY6EF6uRlsXLq5MPI8agIpppsO571ZDZ0DxLxJ_BDOE/s320/02.jpg" width="214" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The next step is to pencil in the composition. I usually find I'm drinking tea and listening to the radio while getting the lines worked in. It's a pretty meditative step as it takes a couple of hours for a piece this size, and it's essential to the success of the overall work, so it needs to be done right. The benefit of completing this step is seeing the size of the composition and image come to life (from small digital file to large art work).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_IJEUTb3c95AF9lzER_jgvRRzewkHUESNctEqYo9jgihAm9FqHCjrJuQ8zKVDlVepx-dQ4K2uHWpWYQ3axErEWvsPnEkAQRD4azxnuy_k-9Wjf6vDd7EpxsNC3GiUlNfumuI8VGObV64/s1600/03.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_IJEUTb3c95AF9lzER_jgvRRzewkHUESNctEqYo9jgihAm9FqHCjrJuQ8zKVDlVepx-dQ4K2uHWpWYQ3axErEWvsPnEkAQRD4azxnuy_k-9Wjf6vDd7EpxsNC3GiUlNfumuI8VGObV64/s320/03.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The next step is to ink the piece. I really enjoy the various techniques I use to create my art works because each one has a different feel, process, and mood. When I draw the image with permanent ink, I work all over the image. I don't just stay in one spot. I have a tenancy to jump from area to area. I find this way of working fresher and more interesting. I like to develop "patches" of tight drawing then I start to connect them with more lines, etc. It's an organic growth.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOvjPzL0wHwUx-bbJTF5lem2g27bFkOB0fUATAsr-grSrNDebFabOm9JQLZKwv9T76id0hanfk8-BMSHf5na_ji2By_h-C39hCNdrq9bgoMHP_T5_ACmwN6FH0fHqbw1-Rp7-LXLqi6vY/s1600/04.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOvjPzL0wHwUx-bbJTF5lem2g27bFkOB0fUATAsr-grSrNDebFabOm9JQLZKwv9T76id0hanfk8-BMSHf5na_ji2By_h-C39hCNdrq9bgoMHP_T5_ACmwN6FH0fHqbw1-Rp7-LXLqi6vY/s320/04.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Drawing is very basic in terms of artistic production. It's one material on one surface. Therefore, set up time is basically non-existent. I like to do a lot of drawing outside of the studio, so this piece ends up travelling with me to various locations. I drew this piece over the summer in my apartment, at several coffee shops on the North Shore of Vancouver, and in the park by the water. A lot of Vancouver folk saw this piece as I worked on it and it received a very positive and lively response.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSKqJitAY6lgdIJHUp6htV1q6LPjIMAISL_ekDt4g_gjYaPJwL21-rK5js3-USlq-X-26EV1F97TV_TeBCkoN6JoqiM6u3_gtHmRBMVOJr0vo3vGkUL2JMUewYK3mMd0D1tBVsttlRrLs/s1600/05.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="127" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSKqJitAY6lgdIJHUp6htV1q6LPjIMAISL_ekDt4g_gjYaPJwL21-rK5js3-USlq-X-26EV1F97TV_TeBCkoN6JoqiM6u3_gtHmRBMVOJr0vo3vGkUL2JMUewYK3mMd0D1tBVsttlRrLs/s320/05.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The picture below is Waterfront Park, which is a few blocks from my apartment in North Van. In the distance is downtown Vancouver, which is just a short (13 minute) seabus ride away. It's also the best way to commute - I take it every day to my desk-job downtown.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6t4zf0vZEPAAvuJHb_Jk3xVQ9yakk8YmcqEg0xoxc6B1xOIW8KqObQvlzFShGAWbZ8GDxnUrtwVPu-jNhyphenhypheneai_Kh1WjyNx6v4lNZTOjjRNdsgv5VrT77CDuwzbLLw7BzKWDff372oBPI/s1600/06.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6t4zf0vZEPAAvuJHb_Jk3xVQ9yakk8YmcqEg0xoxc6B1xOIW8KqObQvlzFShGAWbZ8GDxnUrtwVPu-jNhyphenhypheneai_Kh1WjyNx6v4lNZTOjjRNdsgv5VrT77CDuwzbLLw7BzKWDff372oBPI/s320/06.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I finished the piece after some hearty drawing-time and brought it to the studio to begin painting. Mandatory art-selfie enclosed:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh55MQptAlCHGOZ_bTV4aCCEBF0PEg_KzEFm5zi1TIzDNKA_afGN3aZEWT3ij-rkqrSzfdo292hATH-tts0OJooWj2l4jMXG2GZsDJB7f8inzfgxmyDWfytRDH-Okse4gddNcWJE6PsWXw/s1600/07.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh55MQptAlCHGOZ_bTV4aCCEBF0PEg_KzEFm5zi1TIzDNKA_afGN3aZEWT3ij-rkqrSzfdo292hATH-tts0OJooWj2l4jMXG2GZsDJB7f8inzfgxmyDWfytRDH-Okse4gddNcWJE6PsWXw/s320/07.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After I finished drawing this piece I had to set it aside for a bit while I worked on some paintings for a show which kept me quite busy. I was certain to get the drawing all finished so that when the show was finished I could jump right into the painting phase.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEib6UGekMo02_YcdpzXEkXjKWvSeyIQqTKGy5JTTFwus_9izfYKCKkX67jJenCCemalXkpuCsrm4vl0-w9ZH6MafDvyW5Ty28p7zGS3ov1jhfTlftmjYqSqfSxNx6YKyebw9t8DyEZOV44/s1600/08.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEib6UGekMo02_YcdpzXEkXjKWvSeyIQqTKGy5JTTFwus_9izfYKCKkX67jJenCCemalXkpuCsrm4vl0-w9ZH6MafDvyW5Ty28p7zGS3ov1jhfTlftmjYqSqfSxNx6YKyebw9t8DyEZOV44/s320/08.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I do a lot of really loose paint applications in the early stages. I water down acrylics in cups and pour it across the surface. I leave it to dry flat so that it creates really interesting and spontaneous pooling effects. The way I leave it for the day is different from how I return to it the next day.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1aPE35A4UUPKXu1YYPuflrcMrAQYwoT1AttaBKPCF5AWUP9iSPDWlSQvYhD6FIHh5eTPlBEaRNaCAa6j7eqg1HYpypIs8wRK2RktBiMAjqHbqbYqO_uneVjvqSJDSfBB5HsmAYCWrP4w/s1600/09.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1aPE35A4UUPKXu1YYPuflrcMrAQYwoT1AttaBKPCF5AWUP9iSPDWlSQvYhD6FIHh5eTPlBEaRNaCAa6j7eqg1HYpypIs8wRK2RktBiMAjqHbqbYqO_uneVjvqSJDSfBB5HsmAYCWrP4w/s320/09.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As the piece progresses I start to block in some loose colours and establish certain highlights here and there. They are quite bright at this point, which establishes an overall contrast to build out of. Otherwise, the image is too mid-tone and doesn't feel dynamic enough.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4Oq1p6yw-QspKD_qLMrnCg7bRMHsZ1M2cNzlctbktUP05r2MYyL7cMQrbTuJi2r7BtnWwqwzzYqG9BEFfQiPyMIf4QDo2WLah8nZiLMZVLR8d_f9po9TjEby82s7mlc8qRZ8RfzMfT4c/s1600/10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="125" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4Oq1p6yw-QspKD_qLMrnCg7bRMHsZ1M2cNzlctbktUP05r2MYyL7cMQrbTuJi2r7BtnWwqwzzYqG9BEFfQiPyMIf4QDo2WLah8nZiLMZVLR8d_f9po9TjEby82s7mlc8qRZ8RfzMfT4c/s320/10.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The piece builds up over many studio visits, which I usually limit to just a couple of hours. I prefer to work in very focused spurts, as I find its a more efficient use of my time. I find that doing 10 hours of work in 2 sessions versus 10 hours of work in 4 or 5 sessions is a very different story. I would get much more done in the 4 or 5 sessions, even though the overall time expended was the same. The end product is better this way and it allows me to recharge the creative batteries.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

This area has long been special to me. My first two studios were located in Chinatown, and my current one is just outside the area, in Japantown.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a 1em="" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbgg0z94H2QONCz0LtmK73hLgcBRlBCCYYQAAbqfOLfAQqsTMXoOTX2drY4OspPuuHQafCYcxdgzV-sS7EXpNEY4d4wyX6KNRTLYf6CD0cvbl6HT3VnJPc9BrntDHAgVdm7aDUfqn7q1k/s1600/street_post.jpg" imageanchor="1" margin-right:=""><img border="0" height="284" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbgg0z94H2QONCz0LtmK73hLgcBRlBCCYYQAAbqfOLfAQqsTMXoOTX2drY4OspPuuHQafCYcxdgzV-sS7EXpNEY4d4wyX6KNRTLYf6CD0cvbl6HT3VnJPc9BrntDHAgVdm7aDUfqn7q1k/s320/street_post.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<br />
<div>
There is a distinct neighborhood structure in Vancouver that is emphasized by characteristics such as building motifs, street marker posts, language, etc.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a 1em="" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeLEhFTnqbhSzu_IPT41rJb1XM4K948naYl78lySsskNCJQ-aiOp1pxYT6XF-3M1giOhbRJ5kwirXEQwe07KYIT5Qr4Wd25uop1KAJDqtbVT3jAq6oIlrOQQ_FVwbgBOZ-rTg7LMILEC0/s1600/01.jpg" imageanchor="1" margin-right:=""><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeLEhFTnqbhSzu_IPT41rJb1XM4K948naYl78lySsskNCJQ-aiOp1pxYT6XF-3M1giOhbRJ5kwirXEQwe07KYIT5Qr4Wd25uop1KAJDqtbVT3jAq6oIlrOQQ_FVwbgBOZ-rTg7LMILEC0/s320/01.jpg" width="316" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In Chinatown, the street posts are amazing. They have metal dragons built into them, and the lights themselves are encased in lantern structures. Not only that, but the graffiti comes in different languages, and the major colours are red and purple.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a 1em="" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7I-6tnBK_I5vE1EHcoGqz2cNHv_JI0upeC508LR05EbSBYS8GYhKNYxn_ICu9YzGDy5WyIjzy-D0pVgPlk11pRvwQboHQtireFN7rL-LOR5ybqAHQ6H7FvZpXPEB0hHHbVRo3X7kZPKU/s1600/02.jpg" imageanchor="1" margin-right:=""><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7I-6tnBK_I5vE1EHcoGqz2cNHv_JI0upeC508LR05EbSBYS8GYhKNYxn_ICu9YzGDy5WyIjzy-D0pVgPlk11pRvwQboHQtireFN7rL-LOR5ybqAHQ6H7FvZpXPEB0hHHbVRo3X7kZPKU/s320/02.jpg" width="319" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
These characteristics were essential to one of my latest street sign paintings, titled Main and Pender, which is referential of the intersection where I photographed the original image I painted.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a 1em="" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjz09pocy4F3xJcBVV2O3Oux5toYu-euohQne0afkNue9geoRWiqwWiYCLARSeLbOoIwDB7VwgdQOfk-sHOHdLT7rpHEUsy2hehRgcdw6WVcyLsOIZg9p0fEx2BYShi4VTMo2YWAoc7PLU/s1600/03.jpg" imageanchor="1" margin-right:=""><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjz09pocy4F3xJcBVV2O3Oux5toYu-euohQne0afkNue9geoRWiqwWiYCLARSeLbOoIwDB7VwgdQOfk-sHOHdLT7rpHEUsy2hehRgcdw6WVcyLsOIZg9p0fEx2BYShi4VTMo2YWAoc7PLU/s320/03.jpg" width="318" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The graffiti and stickers are somewhat embellished for the sake of reflecting the feel of the neighborhood. I am really fond of painting those components into the works I make and the little details really pull the piece together.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a 1em="" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQzACJmAOyo9gSsQnw3biEmanZtPLOYMg6-3jguVsmx-_6KMA5vPq7OBT6PuJq_xMerwKNTJc5K94MxdnSI9iz4-ZSYX691OyAmK3D2BpAHZI4_ccQ7RVW_ALgtIjsD55nw-N3o8WloVA/s1600/04.jpg" imageanchor="1" margin-right:=""><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQzACJmAOyo9gSsQnw3biEmanZtPLOYMg6-3jguVsmx-_6KMA5vPq7OBT6PuJq_xMerwKNTJc5K94MxdnSI9iz4-ZSYX691OyAmK3D2BpAHZI4_ccQ7RVW_ALgtIjsD55nw-N3o8WloVA/s320/04.jpg" width="319" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I haven't worked in this colour palette in some time, and I'm glad I did. Red is such a powerful colour, that you really learn some interesting ways to offset the strength it brings. I honed that particular aspect of my colour knowledge through this painting, thats for sure!</div>

<br />
This is the basic ink drawing with first washes of paint. I knew from the start I would be working with a nice rich blue.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzKyXnsJ7dU4ntT4xwOfwjOxPkXrxRFMiEc5tHBS6o_TZjRyCnPycjZRMPwqiLhyphenhyphen3Yg1VWgjctD4QHfFDLdiHprpRa_6Ss_2z2UJidz2yghaHjWkgMkoWqYn3kvRUhheZogM31pltYgHo/s1600/01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzKyXnsJ7dU4ntT4xwOfwjOxPkXrxRFMiEc5tHBS6o_TZjRyCnPycjZRMPwqiLhyphenhyphen3Yg1VWgjctD4QHfFDLdiHprpRa_6Ss_2z2UJidz2yghaHjWkgMkoWqYn3kvRUhheZogM31pltYgHo/s320/01.jpg" width="318" /></a></div>
<br />
I am currently exploring a particular facet of this city, something I had started in the past but never built a large focus around - street signs and street posts. Here is one of my on-site photographs I took while exploring the subject:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbaWJJDQ4CSElVwkK6PmhKQTH_1S8x_LUxwymPueAUmmg-5yHI00fYJQ9lPWA8KTKiw2CEDuwYdzzNDCgSuGTdUIkexu-iOGrt1-bTZxKc4no4ipID0D2jCQSEkbItPktAF8plt2tSzJk/s1600/4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbaWJJDQ4CSElVwkK6PmhKQTH_1S8x_LUxwymPueAUmmg-5yHI00fYJQ9lPWA8KTKiw2CEDuwYdzzNDCgSuGTdUIkexu-iOGrt1-bTZxKc4no4ipID0D2jCQSEkbItPktAF8plt2tSzJk/s320/4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The first one of these that I painted was for a charity gala event last year called H'Arts for the Homeless. For that event I created my work "No Left Turns". It was a lot of fun and what I realized is that I am very intrigued by their appearance and presentation. It turned out really well:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEis9rXoEM2phaeyd90KFBdz-AFEqyAIpJQZx0qRBEAOj72FJKYnTVgahqn14WPf-fc-hecTpMUY7GuSkwLwAeY6P5-9UfLYyzsDb_YM3GP6Ud3k9KHUvvi8vBkQgwdVwi9taa1-fGuN9jU/s1600/no_left_turns.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEis9rXoEM2phaeyd90KFBdz-AFEqyAIpJQZx0qRBEAOj72FJKYnTVgahqn14WPf-fc-hecTpMUY7GuSkwLwAeY6P5-9UfLYyzsDb_YM3GP6Ud3k9KHUvvi8vBkQgwdVwi9taa1-fGuN9jU/s320/no_left_turns.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
There are a lot of pretty generic streetsigns-on-posts out there, but there are others that are composed and clustered in such interesting ways that they merit a particular artistic attention. In addition to the interesting shapes and angles that they form, there is the addition of stickers and graffiti that create a uniqueness that can't be replicated. I've started to paint in some of those stickers here:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4OzvRidcWXudzM5651yXlxBTFC0c-may5yZo_kTXfUqt28AGAJnkKDGq3vJthsxekIv-qAWULAWmhTwaBuPoyNd7Z2QVFhoIEOPaI1oF0tw4jSdm2OUWQstxy-050g6EcVuworN-C_fY/s1600/02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4OzvRidcWXudzM5651yXlxBTFC0c-may5yZo_kTXfUqt28AGAJnkKDGq3vJthsxekIv-qAWULAWmhTwaBuPoyNd7Z2QVFhoIEOPaI1oF0tw4jSdm2OUWQstxy-050g6EcVuworN-C_fY/s320/02.jpg" width="317" /></a></div>
<br />
That is what I find most interesting about these objects - at face value they are so common, so irrelevant and similar. At further investigation, however, they provide their own flavour.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiI2EkFEXwBI_kEckVf_Q8bjJLC7AeZGkG3y_d8OxJtGJeHkLAXRZqHbMDe7kBP9-ZSwdcJxfOzuTv9jGnAliUNESMYIJg3oyjmNTFZtr-L_0FaUesJU1gblwXWPS4JIEsNRltzBBqh2mo/s1600/03.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiI2EkFEXwBI_kEckVf_Q8bjJLC7AeZGkG3y_d8OxJtGJeHkLAXRZqHbMDe7kBP9-ZSwdcJxfOzuTv9jGnAliUNESMYIJg3oyjmNTFZtr-L_0FaUesJU1gblwXWPS4JIEsNRltzBBqh2mo/s320/03.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I am currently producing more street signs from different neighborhoods. This is an ongoing project and not ready to view just yet, but I'm finding that various neighborhoods have very particular and unique characteristics as well, separating them from one another even more.<br />
<br />
The final image that these cool objects creates is quite pleasing, I'm happy with this first one and ready for more:<br />
<br />

Agalychnis callidryas is the scientific term for the red-eyed tree frog which is the subject of my latest painting. This piece was started a little while ago, and was a side project while I worked on other, larger pieces.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.facebook.com/jonshawpaintings" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="315" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMykixvwwskVN-L3fsER_4e8WMmRqH2usEfhVW8zOMYBc5cDN8Uoncj3aHaAnAssdnHGzDzm03Asqt9KYnCu4dkHiYq0sDOjE-cPEA7Bb6Uj374XnXIpsvOL0zb4UmVpRLUbrY7h5eBHQ/s320/frog_1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It is one of my "portable sized" pieces. I usually work on larger pieces at the studio, and works like this one are carted around with me in my daily adventures. I began this piece when taking the skytrain back from the airport, after seeing off my good friend Beth from Vancouver. Drawing on transit is a favorite pasttime of mine.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.facebook.com/jonshawpaintings" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="308" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiC8_zQTiRWS_bpjvrHvcPoZEhwkj0r9t1mgvCMiBqk5ohBq5lp7m13L-9ebAO3oNva4-uvL1M8K8DLGqq10l8hYeyRxdZPUKz7WqhY9w8C_Mt24vtdDXgZxl2u32MPFM7T7ouV16peC24/s320/frog_2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The initial painting began pretty quickly after, but it remained idle because I went on an adventure out to Atlantic Canada to visit old friends for my 5-year university reunion (Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.facebook.com/jonshawpaintings" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpKyXwXURxLerIVxXZFrWRaR-8br94v_nUt7jT0CpMrDH6qb_ErThGJeq9t0yw5TC6UAI1HGjOlZRDHcvrEmNtA_Z-TLVXtZUtjrFzeb43S3ZGhno2Er_v6XMbSgSAzOF5u078w7K9bB0/s320/frog_3.jpg" width="319" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Upon my return to Vancouver, I began working on another painting that consumed me for some time. I worked on this frog here and there, and tightened up the colours on it. I felt that they had gotten richer, and deeper, but were still lacking the volume that I desire to satisfy myself with these art works.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.facebook.com/jonshawpaintings" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzC1-dLpEFnLlyOaMlkqzvoP9SI4m8QmFQNi2v9-hiiP3mjyx3jGJ8grzk02pICMpHLUSmnQV6zZGiVS6IAePBoocqGtPbpJL9WpidmQw5NwLzQ3I16cPBv429-bclxmTXL7Ldc-Ztqcg/s320/frog_4.jpg" width="318" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I made it my mission to sit and finalize this piece last Friday after work. It was one of those nights where I had the time, and I wanted to finish a piece while watching a movie at the studio. If memory serves me correct, I watched The Empire Strikes Back, sipped red wine, and added all the highlights that finalized this piece.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Upon posting to my facebook page (<a href="http://facebook.com/jonshawpaintings">facebook.com/jonshawpaintings</a>) I sold the piece quickly - within an hour. It also got a good response from my followers and I'm happy with the overall piece.</div>

<a 1em="" href="http://www.facebook.com/jonshawpaintings" imageanchor="1" margin-right:=""><img border="0" height="135" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBc7I65w4jduPh52wHWBnc9VL3_ZqgLkre__ToLix3MtimIJTCpCoSBW_wcrJBWDziVEH-tH2K-0ZABXRNBS7Ko-TjvQhQMuo9F8ph3Im6yCyBz5VfG5BGfWtTbgbyuGzW2h6rybkAhjA/s400/bat.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I recently created a piece on a raw spruce baseball bat for the Toronto Blue Jays. This was for their annual gala fundraiser called The Curve Ball, held in Toronto, each May.<br />
<br />
My piece was based on the interests of a particular player; #53, Melky Cabrera. His interests include Land Rovers, Reggaeton music and movies. These played an integral role in the images I painted on the bat.<br />
<br />
Painting on a round surface was a lot of fun. It opened me up to new possibilities and possible future endeavours of painting on various primed objects.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a 1em="" href="http://www.facebook.com/jonshawpaintings" imageanchor="1" margin-right:=""><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhW-T0tZWFH7OuCgWZIbI4GmR4rTDo8q_BQpY0RPfo-D8yYeIXzis77lwTglkLiBv6y50mVQyzNSg4LhgSxzFyfbfOhaL4sxug5UVTh3iOQR65FZUlCaNu9Mp7npzMx2hgee8j1bvb_Mzc/s400/bat01.jpg" width="267" /></a></div>
<br />
One thing I did was use the roundness to my advantage. For example, the handle of the bat has a long strip of film wrapped around it. I felt this was a neat way to draw in a 360-degree manner.<br />
<br />
The process was very similar to my flat pieces. I primed the bat with a clear gesso and did all the ink drawing first.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a 1em="" href="http://www.facebook.com/jonshawpaintings" imageanchor="1" margin-right:=""><img border="0" height="267" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5NE0vK5HFEEYo_GsWjyR9p8M76Rzn-IE6S6o29MWUEYr35P_WNLbKeOSHRfbp5ASre93iqEiLDkg8E50GRWwqWX9kQYAbAKOntSew-7kq5SqBQcQHCorqk1viSrLUvyhA3Q8BZAH0-T8/s400/bat_03.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I filled in various parts of the bat with paint and stencils. One thing I couldn't do that I usually add is the effect of a flat pool of liquid paint left to dry before adding more layers on top of it. Because the bat is round the paint would just run off to the sides!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a 1em="" href="http://www.facebook.com/jonshawpaintings" imageanchor="1" margin-right:=""><img border="0" height="267" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyU5Pz3MrCdPkDTEYWJp3IeAR20vNPD-_jVHg6fDcZajKWfW30YqXpdPFwJOpLnXfs0A3YaEX17BWwGY_e2UaErDa5vuwUND9DMplJyfQeDtPMGi5bx04XDPf_v_3NIKRIkGlBt9H03Yc/s400/4.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a 1em="" href="http://www.facebook.com/jonshawpaintings" imageanchor="1" margin-right:=""><img border="0" height="267" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9B7pFIZlNTHcAOlM6D6f0u6RTwQG6PouYOdfR4uclMhCaA8JgUw7i5nQ9wqZzlKwUpsEEMdEZHk6JJxNh1qr4ba4iJUUw76RgLF4uR4Kfg-rK1RBFAVCXObvAuICjuT_Y8q30jc3UMdo/s400/6.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
At the end, the bat was on display and ready for charity auction in Toronto. However, it was pulled from the show last minute because the player association did not like the fact that I had included a Puerto Rico flag on the bat, as Melky Cabrera has an issue with that flag. I included it as a reference to the origins of Reggaeton music.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a 1em="" href="http://www.facebook.com/jonshawpaintings" imageanchor="1" margin-right:=""><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiU0yhwwRXwzc06i8zQ6prgWuN5OImJz27_tlk67Fgz7LLPBnAquKfIP4fsG5CBQg-UGfOBE3uvwU3t2pPgE-3U7asbRoBlNW4GkI399JkMJLFS8p2KSwolJ8u4SazGC_hqlvgaK4k5-h4/s320/IMG_2770.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I am happy I got to finish the piece but I am pretty upset that my piece was subject to an obvious case of art censorship - where one person got to decide its fate without understanding what was in my piece and why.<br />

I had a booth set up with a number of originals, and new prints and greeting cards I have started developing as an entrepreneurial project.<br />
<br />
The good thing about these shows is that based on numbers, you get to guage what is most popular. For me, that meant that my greeting cards and prints sold in distinct sets.<br />
<br />
For example I discovered that certain Vancouver images sold like hot cakes and more generic ones didn't really at all. I learned that even though both of these prints are very cool images, the First one of the Woodward's W-sign sold significantly higher than the parking meter piece:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.jonshawpaintings.com/" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgO_aUCOm8MOZ5AAIaL7yTEqmf9kB-FAldvd2OllR7ePCwR8bIpEKM0GBSi62H-KvDzfQrZyNJgCQnQW81u0VQG5dU4BYyWEgxa1bDMEA9hzU6PvH_SE3pIQMbXLLDLI1OXmwxfYkCyqcg/s320/12x12_Totem.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.jonshawpaintings.com/" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkdGHDgedoYpP1Qc4lY9KNVq-A0yqkS8Ac6c7qyrOjnCBEgXgwyvqfag8nrJbklq_5X-OaDtL4MIj1kbhzOP0tU0CabPwMhDqM38jiz5LCU10vnvfS8LhK0zx_-TKc1yudvvHGpPI5_7M/s320/11x14_enumerative.jpg" width="251" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When it came to my originals, the situation was interesting to observe as well. I presented several of my smaller, 12" x 12" panels. I have been studying various parts of the city with these "Urban Snapshot" pieces. I found that the ones that show spatial depth and environment were more popular (and sold) versus the ones that were an object study.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For example, the first two images below sold. The third and fourth ones did not. Furthermore, I had the most feedback on the alleyway/spatial ones (the first two). </div>

This is interesting information as it reminds me what appeals to particular audiences. While I don't dictate my work based on mass response, it is certainly good information to have at one's disposal. It's always good to receive feedback and critiques in any means possible..even if it is based on statistical analysis and response!</div>

I recently sold one of my favourite pieces of the latest set, called "Dyadic". It is a painting of two phone booths, representing urban decay and the passage of time.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSsBq63VKe4YIqvOAvKSrh9bMyzcsOv1if5XtFrBkEAUcnymMYCuDedZDlUL8eFFLFBFVpFP2SA-IDSY-4GX20D1AFlsmfLXgsvltg5wfidm2trJ4sCe2WrzbiHSad954wU-mA6GMJu8U/s1600/1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSsBq63VKe4YIqvOAvKSrh9bMyzcsOv1if5XtFrBkEAUcnymMYCuDedZDlUL8eFFLFBFVpFP2SA-IDSY-4GX20D1AFlsmfLXgsvltg5wfidm2trJ4sCe2WrzbiHSad954wU-mA6GMJu8U/s320/1.jpg" width="210" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I approached this piece as the beginning of a fresh set of city art works. I had previously created a few urban-inspired pieces as an experiment. When I realized that I loved making them, and that people were also excited to view them, I decided to create this work that treats them as a pair (the term "Dyadic" refers to dualities, relationships between two objects, etc). View it here: <a href="http://www.jonshawpaintings.com/">www.jonshawpaintings.com</a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As with other works of the same series, I started with an ink drawing. I remember really enjoying making this drawing. I did some of the drawing at a coffee shop near my house with my friend Beth. This was a significant day because at some point walking to/from that coffee shop I lost my wallet and somebody took it..we later found the contents (except cash and credit cards, of course) discarded in a bush. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The drawing took a few days, as this is a 2' x 3' piece, and therefore has more content to fill. It was really awesome seeing it take shape though. I really love that part in the process when I can work on my pieces from anywhere - such as in public venues or with friends. Makes the work hold more memories and connections to people and places.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEid9g_tuLis025cOeCzB5Y6cw5goQoN4aBJq_uUNm3MZTZnIfKqwl_2NLkXWBLLB8agauo3JaPaSLqxvh4glG9ck0Eaiqo99HaE_RsIDUObtdBGTlfHcIVGysr1J3hyphenhyphenKT27aw0xVQGyJCA/s1600/2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEid9g_tuLis025cOeCzB5Y6cw5goQoN4aBJq_uUNm3MZTZnIfKqwl_2NLkXWBLLB8agauo3JaPaSLqxvh4glG9ck0Eaiqo99HaE_RsIDUObtdBGTlfHcIVGysr1J3hyphenhyphenKT27aw0xVQGyJCA/s320/2.JPG" width="209" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As I worked on this piece one thought was about how great it felt to be working on a larger drawing. Now that my most recent show is up and I have more time to explore new projects, I would like to work on something quite large (in the 4' range). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The first stages of painting were as fun as always. I apply very loose pools of paint and let them dry flat. I work very spontaneously at this stage, often working from a loose colour scheme I've picked beforehand. The colours look somewhat disjointed at this stage, but its really interesting to see it like this.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLPHLMJ-TBfgDBxWQ4z-ync2O1WZIFOb8qziaVX-A_5LGkHr7-A7XK4aV1l95HexiKOL9HhVY0la5SFlgpTLSGWWv-Uf-7Gis98OvGCLjiJsVFvOflO3KmgmBMEVB70lRaG82V2yfbbHA/s1600/3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLPHLMJ-TBfgDBxWQ4z-ync2O1WZIFOb8qziaVX-A_5LGkHr7-A7XK4aV1l95HexiKOL9HhVY0la5SFlgpTLSGWWv-Uf-7Gis98OvGCLjiJsVFvOflO3KmgmBMEVB70lRaG82V2yfbbHA/s320/3.JPG" width="209" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This piece was the first time I focused on the addition of stickers, graffiti and other remnants on the phone booth. As time goes on, urban objects such as these phone booths age, decay and collect evidence of time and people gone by. I am very interested in the addition of these components because they are extremely fun to photograph around the city, interpret, and recreate in my paintings.</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
One neat other new addition began in this painting, and became a mainstay in future pieces. I began dropping very light paint blobs on top of lighter highlight areas, to break up the visual plane. I discovered that if I blot them dry when they are half wet/half dry, that I get a really amazing effect where the paint stains an outer ring of colour, and the middle becomes quite transparent. I find that with this subject matter, it adds a whole extra layer of texture and visual appeal.</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
When I started painting seriously, and in the style that I
currently work (with drawing and painting combined) I focused a lot on animal
studies. On my online gallery, <a href="http://www.jonshawpaintings.com/gallery.html">www.jonshawpaintings.com/gallery.html</a>
you will notice that the 2011 work is all animal studies.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
When I figured out just how I like to work and got the flow down, I had this
moment when I realized how much fun it would be to focus on that technical
approach without representing a “subject”. This led me to begin a small series
of abstract works. Below is the step by step development of the first of this
series!</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjidpIGafW-Ym7q8YkhhIiEM_LTmdXbcfSXdiD-0JWYECJMiIJQnqxjFvZk8ui3F4kgU1yoKinKE4dmbASBLpT3lqB15q-IlxA7c_Ck06vYQUqQLRzYdkojgCF6epxumMjSqOs5aZEsycU/s1600/1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjidpIGafW-Ym7q8YkhhIiEM_LTmdXbcfSXdiD-0JWYECJMiIJQnqxjFvZk8ui3F4kgU1yoKinKE4dmbASBLpT3lqB15q-IlxA7c_Ck06vYQUqQLRzYdkojgCF6epxumMjSqOs5aZEsycU/s320/1.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I was doing a show in West Vancouver last August called Harmony Arts. I often
like to work on a piece of art at shows that I do – it attracts attention and
is a great starting point for a discussion about technique. People love to see
the process. So my girlfriend suggested that I work on a new piece at the show,
and I figured doing the abstract work would be the best approach to showcasing
how the layers of my paintings work!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioRQq8JsvPWeFfUGX21Ps08u95wFq3jhSJkIz28QkunwO61oL6w-H7iG5VVccwVldr16Fava-TcRCazC_hbD_qoge37zJIQZkgbmQgqpO3iB-K6jD7nPTtTB6Y_eZ5AqaHV_7XuFX1gRY/s1600/2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioRQq8JsvPWeFfUGX21Ps08u95wFq3jhSJkIz28QkunwO61oL6w-H7iG5VVccwVldr16Fava-TcRCazC_hbD_qoge37zJIQZkgbmQgqpO3iB-K6jD7nPTtTB6Y_eZ5AqaHV_7XuFX1gRY/s320/2.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I started this work (and other abstracts) with loose paint applications.
Usually, when doing a representational piece, I would draw the first ink
drawing before painting it in very loosely. By starting with paint applications
first, I ensure that I can really play around with the notion of spontaneity
and expression.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
I worked with large, broad marks. I wanted a very loose
structure. As the paint dried in the sun at this show, I was able to quickly
move into drawing finer detailed line work.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
The process is so much fun in these works. It’s so uninhibited, and a complete
overload of endorphin production. I put myself in such a good mood while
meditatively tracing over paint and drawing new lines, etc. The more areas I
fill in with paint, the more layers that are established. Then, as those get
traced over/drawn into, new opportunities for deepening colour layers appear.
It’s an ongoing process of exploration and fun. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<o:p> </o:p>Working on larger works (this one is 30” x 30”), I’m able to
get really lost in the process for a long time. I spend time carrying these
works around various parks or public places in the nice weather and start to
draw lines..the work carries me for hours and I’ve actually found myself
getting close to it so that most of my peripheral vision is dwarfed with art.
This makes for a really amazing experience of being lost in the excitement of
the work developing!</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<o:p> </o:p>I had a couple of moments working on this new piece where I
just wasn’t feeling it. I thought it was getting sloppy and overworked, so I
ended up doing a couple of radical paint dumps – one with a big pool of red,
and another where I drizzled clear primer all over the canvas. Once these dried
I was still unhappy with it, but I learned an important lesson to my methods,
which is that its important for me to make a mess with paint then clean it up
with ink lines. That’s what I spent more time on, and eventually I ended up
loving it in the end!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This piece was great for a building exercise in spontaneity, technique and
overall layers and structure. I also pushed my textures and material
combinations; the final canvas has a nice texture to it. The final varnished
piece is now among my favourites!</div>

I think as time goes on I will continue to work on some abstract works
casually, if for nothing else than the sheer joy and relaxation and focused
escape it brings to my day. See the final work and other abstracts at <a href="http://www.jonshawpaintings.com/">www.jonshawpaintings.com</a><o:p></o:p></div>

When I was in art school (I went to Mount Allison University, in New Brunswick) I painted a lot of industrial subject matter and things that were dark, and used lots of browns and greys in my work.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
During one of my painting critiques in second...or third year, I cant remember exactly which, I had a classmate remark that I need to use more colour. At the same time, our painting professor was encouraging us to make a painting a week. He said we had to consistently deliver, and to push ourselves. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I got into a habit of working quickly with colour and doing colour sketches on cardboard. I shifted that into a project where I would paint 50 portraits of people I knew in 50 days..so that I would (hopefully) begin to work very quickly and looser with my paint applications.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I painted a lot of my friends in this time. I took a lot of photos and worked from those as reference. I like this because each one has a story behind it. More stuff at <a href="http://www.jonshawpaintings.com/">www.jonshawpaintings.com</a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is my friend Mike. We used to work together at the Keg restaurant in St.Catharines where I grew up. One time we came home from the bar to crash at my house, but my parents have really loud dogs so instead of risking waking them up he crashed in the back seat of my old car. My dad asked in the morning if I knew that there was a person in the back of my car. It was an odd talk because it was 7am and I was really hungover.</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My buddy Hal. This friend is an exceptional artist and we used to jam on drawing back home all the time. He backpacked south through South America and is one of the more travelled, interesting artist friends I know. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I went to art school with my friend Jessie. She always had this amazing ability to paint bright, vibrant works with minimal brushwork. I always envied her marks and how she could confidently build up colour areas with variety and geometry of paint. It was so cool to watch.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is a self portrait I did. I really like the angle of this. I won't talk much about myself, as there is plenty of that on this blog already!</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is my friend Jono, who I still jam with here in Vancouver. I have painted him more than anybody else, maybe 5 or 6 times. One time I painted a 4' x 4' picture of him playing his bass with his tongue hanging out. He loved it and put it in his apartment. His girlfriend disagreed.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is my friend Lynn who graduated a year before me and now runs a gallery and artist-run-centre in Lunenburg called the Power House. Our friendship began out of a mutual interest in metal sculpture and time spent in the metal shop, which is also what explains my initial painting direction before adding colour. Lynn and I have been known to use grinders and drink coffee at the same time.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My old roommate Neil. What a fellow. I remember painting this piece when I was watching Snakes on a Plane at my old house. I also remember this one flowed so well and came together so quickly. Must have been from the quality of that movie in the background! The first time I met Neil was when I was unpacking my bag upon arrival in first year at our residence room. His parents were also there. The first thing that happened was my big glass bong fell out of my bag onto the floor and we all stopped and looked at it. That was awkward.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is my friend Sarah. She was really into theatre and also modelled for some of our life drawing classes. It was always awesome when a creative person modelled because they didn't act weird about it, and when you saw them around campus things wouldn't seem strange. Sarah's a great actor and cool gal.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

As an artist, I inevitably develop particular visuals and recurring images in my work. This is referred to as a "visual language", and many creative people have it. For visual artists, this can be certain subjects that pop up time and time again, and particular brush marks and line styles. </div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
I got really into the visuals of turkey vultures (aka Cathartes Aura). These creatures are just so weird. They have scraggly skin, weird bumps, holes through their heads (ie nostrils) and freaky pointed beaks. They are bald and look like death. I was told by a friend that they can even projectile-vomit at other creatures. How cool is that! For me, this of course meant I got to focus on all the fun, intricate lines when drawing. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For this particular painting, I worked on a cool horizontal composition. The canvas is 2' x 4', a size orientation I hadn't worked with before. There were some compositional questions to be ironed out before any painting started, so I worked with some thumbnail sketches and played around with paper cut outs to establish the look I wanted. Since I worked from several source images, I found this to be quite necessary so that nothing looked amis.</div>

This image became somewhat of a travelling icon of my work for a little bit after I made this painting. First, the actual canvas itself has been featured in two shows. One at last years State of the Art show in Whistler, and most recently in a group exhibition at my old haunt, the Gam Gallery, in Vancouver. This picture below is right when I arrived in Whistler to set up my work in my space. What you can see just to the right is my snowboard. As soon as these works were hung I was on the slopes :)</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Once I realized I loved the image of the vultures, I used it for other displays. I was invited to participate in a group print show in Vancouver called Design 24. We each created a single image that was hand screened into limited editions. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I created a black and white profile sketch with just ink pens, scanned it, and vectorized it in Illustrator so that it could be used at any size. The original drawing was actually the same size as the final printed one..although tracing the image meant that all the lines would be 100% black. This is the final design once digitized:</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Upon finishing this print, I decided to try putting the design on a t-shirt. I have a friend named Trevor (he runs a great biz called <a href="http://www.facebook.com/ebonaves">Evon Aves Apparel</a>) who is a talented artist and printer himself, who helped me do my first run of shirts. I sold a number of them, still have a few left on my shop (<a href="http://shop.jonshawpaintings.com/">shop.jonshawpaintings.com</a>) but ultimately decided to limit their creation out of effort and needing to order large up-front stocks. I still really like what happened with their design though, and I keep one around for myself to sport from time to time (goes great with a blazer jacket :)</div>

<br />
The alleys in downtown Vancouver are quite notoriously beautiful and interesting. They have all kinds of cool character to them, and the collection of graffiti, colour, form, bricks, wires and exposed metal is so intriguing.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFdnQAzkGZ6w21-jcLvfVGhBAqyZ5SHSS0KnNiIw22xGoBjM-NJXQxJXFJvyUIhN0Qxo2BchGUR_27WoWgokZIJ__xNpoJvgDMLZWU3xJIZeduqan3XP1-fRpMYEMu0BOy43NSIyQTjxM/s1600/1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="330" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFdnQAzkGZ6w21-jcLvfVGhBAqyZ5SHSS0KnNiIw22xGoBjM-NJXQxJXFJvyUIhN0Qxo2BchGUR_27WoWgokZIJ__xNpoJvgDMLZWU3xJIZeduqan3XP1-fRpMYEMu0BOy43NSIyQTjxM/s400/1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
One of the subjects I've taken a keen interest in painting lately are dumpsters. To me, these objects are big behemoths of hidden necessity. Think about it - we use them, but we hide them away from sight and let others deal with the mess. They serve a very functional role in our urban lives, and at the same time they just kind of sit there and rust, get banged around by big vehicles and filled with junk.<br />
<br />
As I continue to explore the city, and capture images of what I find to be special, I get more and more excited about the means to generate a piece of art.<br />
<br />
I've always had a love of complexities when it comes to subject matter and composition. For example, when I was younger in high school art class, I always drew well rendered still-life compositions of many complicated objects. I would arrange them in a cool way, light them, and sit and draw them for hours. Single objects usually didn't thrill me too much, but when I started having items and objects interacting with each other, things became more interesting!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVlYBrapAMpPjJMBo0nL3yMSHBCqbEHsvD5ZoDHeCff9X7aZKs2MxKgGqs0ClOyc3xstOKynz4YwJD8ArzLUSwNe_cBDkA8Gbdg-Op_K7xY8lLqGu1BucOjZ9akADKGsM8FnwNDwp8nek/s1600/4.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVlYBrapAMpPjJMBo0nL3yMSHBCqbEHsvD5ZoDHeCff9X7aZKs2MxKgGqs0ClOyc3xstOKynz4YwJD8ArzLUSwNe_cBDkA8Gbdg-Op_K7xY8lLqGu1BucOjZ9akADKGsM8FnwNDwp8nek/s400/4.png" width="378" /></a></div>
<br />
With dumpsters that have rust, texture, graffiti, stickers, and other crap built up on their surfaces, I have an opportunity to express my joy of creating a larger composition out of so many little bits. I get to take liberties and composite more or less of these elements as I see fit for this particular piece. I add more bits to build up certain areas and break up the visual plane, which makes the image more interesting to our eyes and minds.<br />
<br />
My approach to this piece was a bit experimental. There were some new elements I added and explored. I find that when I'm making a series of work, there is a slow evolution within the overall body of work, while maintaining the same look and feel that holds the overall series together. For example, in this work, I started the work out of a single, very wide brush mark of a rusty red-orange. As the work progressed I printed a ring shape on top with the back of an old yogurt container.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3MaC1RakcKQLrDr73n5-vx0I3MoOQgKNxci4M36Uh06J6L7OcD-Mo-Hux_kD2EFl5p5Er54I4hPY1NkpbJ8MM6-A27Q1Q0hl-KywZTAU98TeeR7HvfT0mLZdL67cTyt382O7sinD5LO4/s1600/2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="337" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3MaC1RakcKQLrDr73n5-vx0I3MoOQgKNxci4M36Uh06J6L7OcD-Mo-Hux_kD2EFl5p5Er54I4hPY1NkpbJ8MM6-A27Q1Q0hl-KywZTAU98TeeR7HvfT0mLZdL67cTyt382O7sinD5LO4/s400/2.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I got quite liberal with some of the brush marks in this piece as well. I find sometimes as I'm making these works I just get really spontaneous, exciting urges to quickly drag some heavy paint through an area, uninhibited. This gives the work such a sense of immediate energy and spontaneity that contrasts the tight ink lines so well.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsJb0nPW6ymejYObCSjFFfZEcNGJk5EbpOttnQWUV_toADQbkFCCSxoESKgIDoYc1DHtbIQYmMDuZ3kwcg2O63UIzehklWjp5n8V3B-PUYmWAS1sn6PJqTH777WezjjGq98_uYK0OC4zM/s1600/3.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="291" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsJb0nPW6ymejYObCSjFFfZEcNGJk5EbpOttnQWUV_toADQbkFCCSxoESKgIDoYc1DHtbIQYmMDuZ3kwcg2O63UIzehklWjp5n8V3B-PUYmWAS1sn6PJqTH777WezjjGq98_uYK0OC4zM/s400/3.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
In this instance, this purple swiggle represents the mood I was in that evening at the studio. I remember being so high on endorphins (happens when I'm painting and full of beans) and I was listening to really loud Led Zeppelin. The studio was empty, and I made these two marks so quickly and without thinking, and felt so good about that decision right after.<br />
<br />
That is something I often tell people about my work - I "make a mess" with the immediacy of paint, then "clean it up" with the ink lines..and selectively decide which areas get really cleaned up, and which remain spontaneous and loose.<br />

I made a 30 second video for a radio commercial a little while back. The radio station I made it for is called The Peak, and they are a rock station here in Vancouver. This is the finished video: <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DcKTv1xO8j8">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DcKTv1xO8j8</a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The contest involved making an ad in any medium. I noticed I was one of the only entrants to animate. I didn't win anything, but at least I made a cool video.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For me, making this video was awesome because it allowed me to deal with two themes that are prevalent in my paintings now - technology (mostly music in this instance) and the city - specifically Vancouver. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Each of the assets was handdrawn, scanned, then turned into vector art via illustrator. I had a lot of fun making the original drawings, as they deal heavily with the black line work I enjoy working with. Since I work as a web and graphic designer, I enjoy using the Adobe suite and therefore making my drawings digital is fun. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When I look back at this piece, it makes me want to do a few things. It makes me want to work with this look of solid colour and black and white drawings on top. Perhaps this will become a painting experiment soon! It also makes me want to make some more cool animation, although I don't see that happening as quickly as the painting. The other thing this makes me want to do is to make very busy, clustered art works on wood panel. Again, this might just pop up in the coming months! I love to experiment.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The look of the work is pretty branded - the blue colour choice was picked from the radio station's logo - this WAS an exercise in branding, afterall!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here's the link to the final piece on youtube: The compression is a bit down because its YouTube, but the original is quite sharp! <br />
One of my favourite works from the last couple of months of work has been the painting I made of the Sun Tower, a very old and super cool building in downtown Vancouver.<br />
<span id="goog_1602666433"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiX9ytJUJOl3ck4wpu9xcAkKcCYEhL8T8v8lN_3oG3rYIj7TJKPMduL_A_l0KFSUs3YO4zeeZnb9BpMbsS0W4Hpq4h-4uEbMvlpLofqyYSwf2cVhgkCEWD1IfvGmu60zYxFBZ-Gb4Hccds/s1600/1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="256" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiX9ytJUJOl3ck4wpu9xcAkKcCYEhL8T8v8lN_3oG3rYIj7TJKPMduL_A_l0KFSUs3YO4zeeZnb9BpMbsS0W4Hpq4h-4uEbMvlpLofqyYSwf2cVhgkCEWD1IfvGmu60zYxFBZ-Gb4Hccds/s320/1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The building is on the edge of Chinatown, the Downtown East Side, Gastown and upper-scale downtown. It's in this weird melting-pot area that has beautiful old buildings, drugs, hipsters and exercise divas.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQwUmsO5T-hqOI7-Ao_oJMyqb4nDUXk2YN8QCLLOKB1cwc8AsaMXhCTmJAn98J38L1L3KL5byrSdYeac4rM1CeXMVhJ11d8_2q2Povfj6FmVzO3oseP0FXLAdHABPNGZJOnAYMwdDqHYA/s1600/4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQwUmsO5T-hqOI7-Ao_oJMyqb4nDUXk2YN8QCLLOKB1cwc8AsaMXhCTmJAn98J38L1L3KL5byrSdYeac4rM1CeXMVhJ11d8_2q2Povfj6FmVzO3oseP0FXLAdHABPNGZJOnAYMwdDqHYA/s320/4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
This painting is titled "Nine-To-Five". I work as a graphic/web designer during the days and the company I work for (MacLaren McCann) is located in the Sun Tower. This building houses a lot of creative and marketing companies.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuPMPfKh74Kda7wJn4qnECctWuGaCLxWK87SFyWqYnqz46ELk5mHcOmZC54Xn6_Ppevat_cCEW8IQ8hVxlxsUwr48uogbz6BEE-wRo9i0wNztxEPFe0xwidq4uiypWccfwHkIsNJqjoq4/s1600/7.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuPMPfKh74Kda7wJn4qnECctWuGaCLxWK87SFyWqYnqz46ELk5mHcOmZC54Xn6_Ppevat_cCEW8IQ8hVxlxsUwr48uogbz6BEE-wRo9i0wNztxEPFe0xwidq4uiypWccfwHkIsNJqjoq4/s320/7.png" width="246" /></a></div>
<br />
The overall design of the building is what struck me to want to paint it, and that awesome coloured roof. I heard a story that the roof was painted that colour because the owners wanted it to look expensive, but since it isn't actually made out of copper, it wouldn't oxidize like the other cool buildings of the day.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6wzwx91GjfbocDXcaOU7EpFNatUDkwtq3-I-1RMICEvswxpqXJ_uG4G1y5_TPTwm-ugcL0Rw3sGV7RYg1aXYGBiDKr4NdK6K2v9gYY1SlrQVjfcZSqDtzhS6l6zwaXFH1V92B9OSQ2-0/s1600/8.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="122" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6wzwx91GjfbocDXcaOU7EpFNatUDkwtq3-I-1RMICEvswxpqXJ_uG4G1y5_TPTwm-ugcL0Rw3sGV7RYg1aXYGBiDKr4NdK6K2v9gYY1SlrQVjfcZSqDtzhS6l6zwaXFH1V92B9OSQ2-0/s320/8.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The design elements are great. There is a common use of the these circular elements (I'm not sure the exact term for them) which are very organic, floral, ounded and highly decorative. Recreating them in this painting was a very enjoyable experience.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJn4AX9i5JM1Cwa95cC9jsrBWxL6fD-R7RiFa96gbSw9Qwz-cDMdcBmvOH1DYuzbLtdfL-Zne_F0Q_O8IHILjNttucMHBedcVpDU-8NfkRue_HRtSRVKFnM_fnwK8AYPADvneCn1HeSdw/s1600/5.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="312" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJn4AX9i5JM1Cwa95cC9jsrBWxL6fD-R7RiFa96gbSw9Qwz-cDMdcBmvOH1DYuzbLtdfL-Zne_F0Q_O8IHILjNttucMHBedcVpDU-8NfkRue_HRtSRVKFnM_fnwK8AYPADvneCn1HeSdw/s320/5.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
My colour palette for this piece is pretty representative of the actual colours. I always take liberties with expanding the colours at least a bit, so as to create an interesting visual. For this work I definitely wanted to maintain the look of the roof and masonry so that people would recognize it as the Sun Tower. Often I change the colours a lot, but here I've maintained pretty closely.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOxpHEZYUeQDvLBlNUquCVuMbiwZwXxGvqwFL0LLhxJHpuiynoZwcojncSE21TjjyqdxsOjKM4zi6WxC_FDvxcnI-5VvZxjSwO1gSv7bejXs70QYZUZwSb8ZpFknH-4LKnegFBX6tSPnQ/s1600/2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOxpHEZYUeQDvLBlNUquCVuMbiwZwXxGvqwFL0LLhxJHpuiynoZwcojncSE21TjjyqdxsOjKM4zi6WxC_FDvxcnI-5VvZxjSwO1gSv7bejXs70QYZUZwSb8ZpFknH-4LKnegFBX6tSPnQ/s320/2.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
The building has a really cool view. One of the things I've discovered by working here is that you can get onto the roof, and then scale up the side of the tower via the fire escape (its one of those old zig-zag metal staircases). There's a pretty excellent view at the top.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiK9I3VUsGvcqR2vHpjYnaEq5B0dTAdwBlE_v62xQrQbw7cSqFgIvpgJKAx1KNvVfRq8mmt83AqAlnBQb6dufv_tnKG5H8EvtS-laoR2iwMwkCbaNxts1sYEUUP7nh7SB1IGEumuaChZqc/s1600/6.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiK9I3VUsGvcqR2vHpjYnaEq5B0dTAdwBlE_v62xQrQbw7cSqFgIvpgJKAx1KNvVfRq8mmt83AqAlnBQb6dufv_tnKG5H8EvtS-laoR2iwMwkCbaNxts1sYEUUP7nh7SB1IGEumuaChZqc/s320/6.png" width="172" /></a></div>
<br />
When I was up close I got a very cool view of these details on the roof. Being so close to them on our adventure was awesome, as the little details aren't noticable from the street!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br />
Overall this has proven to be one of my more popular pieces and I'm very proud of it. It looks great on wood panel and is currently hanging in a show called "City:Life" at the Pendulum Gallery in downtown Vancouver.<br />

<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
I made this new painting rather quickly. Part of that was because I was really excited about the process, but the other part was because my show was quickly approaching and I wanted to get ONE MORE piece done :)</div>
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">

<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
This piece is called "Enumerative", which relates to the concept of counting and calculating and tracking numerically.</div>
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">

<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
The subject is a city parking meter. The cool thing about working with this is that it has neat little additions to work with - stickers that people have placed on the post, brand logos for Visa/Mastercard, and a Starbucks cup sitting on top (I really like adding these little pieces of urban trash or "remnants").<br />
<br />

<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
The process of this piece is what's most exciting for me. I slightly altered how I create these works. Often I work from photographs (some sourced online, some shot myself) and then I prepare the panel drawing first. In this instance, I altered that starting point. I did a small sketch of the image I wanted to work from with simple pen. The way I sketch is quite loose and pretty representative, although I usually have a minor level of play with the line work.<br />

<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
After I sketched it, I projected that sketch large onto the prepared wood panel. This is interesting, because there are lots of subtle lines that go unnoticed and are part of the subconscious process of drawing. When they are projected, however, they are larger, more prominent, and can be worked into the new image in a more interesting way!</div>
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">

<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
The line quality changes at such a large scale. It becomes very organic, and I trace over a lot of them (some I omit too) and they become very different. They become large structure components and the way that the image re-builds itself is quite layered, organic, surreal and distorted. It still maintains a particular level of representation too, however.</div>

What I find, when I compare the ink drawing (before I paint over top of it) to previous ones, is that this one is more exciting visually. It has these cool components that only became a part of the work via the particular process I chose to produce the work.</div>
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">

<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
When it's time to paint the rest of the work, I approached it the same as my other works. I paint in different ways - some broad, single brush marks to start and establish cool shapes and colour areas. Upon drying, I will dump liquid paint in pools on various parts of the work, and let it dry flat (with a heater underneath) so that the pooling creates a different visual look then brushmarks.<br />

I stencil heavy acrylic paint through perforated paper to create the dotted, half-tone effect that is present in most of my works.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>

<br /></div>
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
I then render certain areas with a higher degree of shadow and highlights. I really enjoy painting lighter areas with transparent white - lots of painters only use white as thick top-layers, although I really enjoy what happens when I fill areas in with white that is see-through and has visible brushmarks.</div>
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">

<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
I usually finish my works with some light drops of colour over certain light areas to break up the highlights. This gives another layer and cool look to the piece..sometimes I will blot it dry with a towel when it is semi-dry, which leaves a cool "ring" effect.<br />
<br />

<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
My final step is to re-ink a lot of the black areas, which have become a bit matted from the paint over top of them. This step is favourable and fun because its senseless linework that is often completed with the company of a fine bottle of wobbly-pop.<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
I sign, document, varnish and wire my pieces at the end.</div>

The Only, as it is/was called, was a staple destination for decades. It was shut down over allegations of drug trafficking from the owners. Now, the sign stands idle, as a monument to the shifting look of the Downtown East Side and a reminder of the glory days of the infamous and decorative neon signs that still light up certain parts of Vancouver, but decay and rot in others.<br />
<br />
As time goes on and I prepare many new pieces in my urban/city series, I feel as though I'm taking more of a critical/careful look at my connection to the places and images I'm working with. I like that this sign was a marker on my walk to the old studio, so I have that personal connection.<br />

I'm wrapping up a couple of in-progress works now, and I will stop when those are ready. The rest need to be varnished, wired for hanging, and packaged up to ship to the gallery.<br />
<br />
I'm very pleased with the body of work overall. It's been very fun to make these, and I'm ready to keep making a huge number of them as time goes on.<br />

<br />
I painted this new piece pretty quickly. I got really involved in its creation and I couldn't stop! One of the things that I loved about it so much was the fact that each recycle bin had to be covered in lots of visual textures - graffiti, stickers, writings, etc. The process of researching and replicating all of these little bits was very enjoyable and focused.<br />
<br />
The references to pop culture are my favourite. I've included nintendo characters and imagery related to film (Ghostbusters logo). The ability to reproduce all of these icons, and have them make sense in such a visual mismatch like this painting, was a joy and a half :)<br />

People, structures, surreal utopias. The three of us interpret various details of what makes urban life so fascinating.</span><br />

While these are part of the overall theme of my current work - urban/city decay, metamorphosis and change, these stand alone because of their size and particular content.<br />
<br />
These works are only 12" x 12", so they are smaller than the others. However, this is an intentional choice - as a city commuter, my work needs to be small enough that I can carry it on busses and work on it while travelling. I do this on my way to and from work - I am always drawing. Keeping this ongoing series will certainly be a beneficial step forward into growing the number of finished works.<br />
<br />
Furthermore, the intent of these pieces is to cover the breadth of imagery available in urban centres. Cities are beautiful, decaying, ever-changing, and present us with so much visual interest. As I walk around Vancouver, I am taking many pictures with my phone to use as reference material. When I am starting a new one of these snapshot studies, I choose something particularly interesting and turn it into a work of art. The titles I am giving them "Homer and Cordova", "Pender and Cambie", etc reflect where I was in the city when I took the picture.<br />
<br />
My hope is to make these for a long while..and eventually show a ton of them at a cool venue somewhere.<br />

The event is really neat - there are 4 teams of 2 people. Each team has 80 minutes to create a work on a 30" x 40" canvas. The fun bit is collaborating the styles and skills, and my partner <a href="http://jenniferharwood.com/">Jennifer Harwood</a> and I did a fun job of communicating ideas and working spontaneously and on-the-fly (while sticking to a loose, original plan).<br />
<br />
I've done a few Live Painting competitions in Vancouver. I really like the whole experience. It's a fun time more than anything, a bunch of people who love to paint get together and we work in front of an audience! Time goes by at an accelerated pace, as when people are watching you and there are lights on you and you don't have time to think too much about decisions!<br />
<br />
This is the stage set up before the painting started.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<br /></div>
The organizers of the show are really great. I've met a number of awesome people so far who I think for their efforts, and introducing me to great other artists!<br />

<br />
The event was really well attended! There must have been a couple of hundred folks in there, and the energy was great. The Urban Winery is an awesome venue!<br />

It’s called “Nine-To-Five” because it refers to my dayjob. I work in this building, called the Suntower, in Vancouver. The building is really cool and rad, and I’ve wanted to paint it for a long time. The colour on the roof was a lot of fun to work with!</span><br />

Here are some new in progress snippets of a subseries on smaller wood panels. I'm creating these on a smaller scale for variety's sake, experimentation, and breadth of subject coverage. I'm so fascinated with the city, and everything it presents to be represented through art, so this gives me a chance to really explore what I find super appealing. These will be ready within the week.<br />

Looking back on work in the past, I've always been drawn to the urban structure, urban decay, and the magical colours, textures, and visual density that occurs when years of people's marks and influence change the look of various thing around us. <br /><br />Vancouver is a city with an unquestionable grittiness (quite a contrast to the bright, happy pictures we often see). The crumbling buildings and decay of the Downtown East Side (where my studio is) is a wealth of visual inspiration.<br /><br />I've wanted to focus on urban decay and the city for some time. I started these pieces on wood panel and so far they are capturing a really awesome amount of attention. I'm really stoked to see this series start to develop.<br />
<br />
These objects (like phonebooths) that sit idle and often unused..and collect years of writing, marks, stickers, etc. are a testament to the motion and activity around them. They sit there, collecting memories and watching out at the city that passes them by, slowly disappearing...<br /><br />Yet they speak to the ever changing world of technology, social norms, behaviour and so forth.<br />
<br />
Fascinating? They are to me :)<br />
